Our goal is to use our knowledge and expertise to help and guide customers in buying the correct gear for whatever their needs might be. Even though technically our job is to sell stuff, we would rather not sell something than sell the wrong thing to someone. We don't like pushy sales people, and we never want to be one.</div>
However, over the last 40-some years we have sat in on many sales seminars. One of the things they try to teach is that a sales person is never supposed to say NO or ask the customer a question that can be answered with no, the ultimate goal being to get the customer to say YES to making a purchase. <br />
The last year has been brutal. We have said NO to customers more times in the last 12 months than we have in 40-some years.<br />
With factories, suppliers, and shipping facilities across the globe and in the US still closed or operating at limited capacity due to Covid-19, there have been huge delays and inventory shortages in every category of products we sell. Across the board, (no pun intended), we have been a boardshop without, or at least very few boards to sell. Products that we pre-ordered in the early fall of 2020 and that were scheduled to arrive in March of 2021, might be showing up sometime in late May or early June.<div> While it was brutal have the shop closed for two months last year, it has been equally as painful having customers coming into the store to buy, fill in the blank, skateboards, SUPs, surfboards, longboards, snowboards and have to tell them NO, we didn't have any to sell. Even worse, when they ask when are we getting more boards, we have had to say, "we don't know." Even our suppliers don't know when, and even sometimes what, is coming in from their factories. It is been a crazy way to try to do business. <div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">YES!</span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div><div>Fortunately, it has not been all bad....... </div><div>Yes, it was great to allow customers in the shop again last June. </div><div>Yes, we have been getting small shipments of SUP's and getting people on the water.</div><div>Yes, we have gotten a few of the cool new wings from Naish and Slingshot.(who is ready to fly?)</div><div>Yes, we have more boards on the way (sometime).</div><div>Yes, we actually have a good selection of longboards and skateboards.</div><div>Yes, we had a great turnout for the Tuesday Night Social (Distancing) SUP last summer and we will be resuming them again in a few weeks.</div><div>Yes, we have great customers helping us get through this challenging time.</div><div>Yes, we love our customers.</div><div>Yes, we are still stoked.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eKHxxT6Higjza527JpEfUtWvaMLsbRbs4DOuyMJ8bKJzLi_nzupC2-VhEuCo6Bd9w1ESFwuNneBnIOilW5uNgM2Np8HYDbc7JJ9_ISj3HlL0HA-Wx09Zp6WHcNOwzqR71E1KJNaHX6A/s960/group4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="782" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eKHxxT6Higjza527JpEfUtWvaMLsbRbs4DOuyMJ8bKJzLi_nzupC2-VhEuCo6Bd9w1ESFwuNneBnIOilW5uNgM2Np8HYDbc7JJ9_ISj3HlL0HA-Wx09Zp6WHcNOwzqR71E1KJNaHX6A/s320/group4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div> </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div></div></div>mark bandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02187232389111323557noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9048069304792303736.post-5307986197349781552020-04-24T09:26:00.000-07:002020-04-24T09:26:45.341-07:00Stay well. Stay safe. Stay stoked Wow! Where to even start? Can anyone even have imagined?<br />
Who even heard the words "social distancing" before three months ago? Now they are words to live by...literally. Facemasks? We wore them snowboarding or for sun protection, not to the grocery store.<br />
I don't think anyone expected 2020 to be like this. We sure didn't. After a lackluster local snow season, we were so ready to jump into spring with both feet, not lock our doors.<br />
We wanted to windsurf, to foil, to surf, to SUP, to kite, to skate and to help our customers do it too.<br />
So many things put on hold, rescheduled, and cancelled. It is not just East of Maui. It is not just Annapolis. It is not just Maryland, It is not just the US. The whole freaking world is affected by this Covid Virus and is SHUT DOWN!<br />
<br />
Fortunately, the State of Maryland has recognized that exercise is beneficial to health, and staying well. At the time of writing this, Maryland has allowed for selected recreational activities, including Stand Up Paddling as legal forms of exercise.<br />
No, this this is not the time to get all rad and extreme. It is the time to use a little extra caution, keep your distance from others, get out there and get a little exercise, and stay safe. Be grateful we are not completely confined to our homes like so many others around the world. <br />

</div>
It is scary stuff. It is fun when you are high. You crash really hard. One hit, and you want more!<br />
NO......, I'm not talking about illegal drugs. I am talking about foiling. Specifically, Windsurf Foiling.<br />
From America's Cup boats, to surfboards, to wakeboards, kiteboards, and windsurfers, foiling and foils are becoming more and more prevalent on many types of watercraft.<br />
For those unfamiliar, foils are a wing or a set of wings attached under the boat or the board. Very much like an airplane wing, as the foil moves forward through the water, it generates lift, in turn flying the hull or board up out of the water. Once up on foil, the drag goes away and both speed and apparent wind increase resulting in even more speed.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQP7-7l2v05Zw6BK8AZmsHY1Xx_ia9sCGY3ykZTZvRpstEwESkZN0cLD70Nu9JJgrEtQiWFgL1XN8xy-D-ifpXFC47Ft-A9mQ7k7BUxpzCugNTZaWHlhmNvdMpXT2styGGsfWQRIq7XN0/s1600/19710000_main-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1102" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQP7-7l2v05Zw6BK8AZmsHY1Xx_ia9sCGY3ykZTZvRpstEwESkZN0cLD70Nu9JJgrEtQiWFgL1XN8xy-D-ifpXFC47Ft-A9mQ7k7BUxpzCugNTZaWHlhmNvdMpXT2styGGsfWQRIq7XN0/s200/19710000_main-1.jpg" width="183" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Slingshot Windsurf Foil</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
With the exception of light wind windsurfing which I discussed my last article, "Back to the Future", windsurfing has always been about speed. In order to go fast you either A: need to live in a windy area, or B: use large, hard to handle sails, and specialized boards. While extremely exciting, holding on to the sail for dear life is hard and hard on the body. <br />
Foil windsurfing on the other hand is easy on the body. Once you learn to pump the foil up, you can use a much smaller sail in the same amount of wind, than on a conventional board and still find yourself flying across the water. The key word is flying. You are no longer slapping and pounding on the water and beating up your body. Also, once up on foil the drag goes away and the rig isn't trying to yank your arms out of their sockets, just a light grip on the boom is all you need. When you are up on foil, everything gets so smooth and quiet, it is the closest feeling I've ever had to snowboarding in powder. It is an amazing sensation.<br />
Can someone without windsurfing or sailing experience learn to Windsurf Foil? The jury is still out on this one, but I think the answer is yes. With a floaty enough board, the foil works like a keel helping to stabilize the board, which in turn makes it easy to stand on the board and pull the sail out of the water, a technique called uphauling. In non-foiling conditions, the foil, once again works like a keel, to help the board track well, making it possible to learn to sail back and forth before getting up on foil. Obviously some windsurfing or sailing experience is a bonus. Whether cruising on a Windsurfer LT or flying across the water on a foil, there has never been a better time to be a windsurfer. <br />
Who is ready to Fly into the Future<br />
<span style="color: red;">Warning! Just like the illegal stuff , foiling is extremely addictive. It may cause you to skip work, and make irrational decisions based on the wind forecast. You may experience withdrawal symptoms. Most of all it will put a smile on your face, and your friends will wonder what you have been up to. </span><br />

<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I first started Windsurfing in 1980 or 81 it was just another way to go sailing. It was difficult to get a Laser or Sunfish off the roof of the car by yourself, but it was easy to load and unload a windsurfing board. There was nothing high tech about windsurfing, it was a simple way to get out on the water. Just you, a board, a sail, a little wind and you were good to go. Doing it with a couple friends, and you were having twice as much fun or maybe even a race. We would take trips to new places just to go windsurfing. Small lakes all around the country, and around the world were filled with people windsurfing. Then windsurfing got high tech, high performance, high wind and wave oriented. It was still fun, but it got expensive and it got time consuming. Peoples lives revolved around chasing wind and chasing waves, buying tons of gear. Towns like Hood River, places like Maui boomed with windsurfers. Unfortunately, as the performance envelope got pushed, the gear for learning and light wind sailing just sort of disappeared. As the gear went away, so did new people learning to windsurf. People dropped out of the sport. A kitesurfing friend joked, "Windsurfing Has Been Cancelled" </span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For some of us, it wasn't really a funny joke.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fortunately in 2017 Cobra Manufacturing teamed up with designer Bruce Wylie and set out to create a board that so simple it could be picked up off the beach and enjoyed by a first-time sailor as well as offering superb tactical fleet racing to a more advanced sailor. They ended up creating the board now known as the Windsurfer LT. They became available in the US in 2019. I bought one. Even with a smallish soft sail, that can be rigged in minutes, the board is super fun to sail in the light to medium winds we get on the Chesapeake and in most real world places. If there is no wind at all it works great as a Stand Up Paddle Board. The new lighter weight construction makes it even easier to get on and off the car than the 80's version. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have had fun Windsurfing for 40 years. With the addition of the LT to my collection of boards, I had more days windsurfing locally last year than I have in a long time, it was fun.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> WINDSURFING.....It's Back! Back to the Future.</span></span><br />

We think helmets for snowboarding and skiing are a good idea. We also think that helmets don't replace common sense, they do not make you "bulletproof" and won't help in every type of impact, but we know many, many people who have benefited directly from the use of a helmet,whether it be minimizing the effects of a hard slam, or clipping a limb riding in the trees.<br />
<br />
I started wearing a helmet in 1998, the same year Sonny Bono died from a head injury while skiing. I was accused of jumping on the Bono Bandwagon, but the truth be known, I had already decided to wear one before his accident. I wouldn't get on a bike without a helmet, yet on the snow I was going just as fast if not faster on the snowboard, with just as many hard things to hit, so figured a snow helmet was a good idea. <br />
That first helmet was like wearing a bowling ball on my head. It weighed a ton, had no ventilation, and was uncomfortable as hell. As bad it was, I have never ridden without a helmet since, and can't ever imagine doing it.<br />
<br />

Fortunately, helmet technology has come a longways in 20 years. The newest generation of helmets are lightweight. Most of them offer opening and closing vents for temperature control, and many have a Boa or similar system for dialing in the fit. Almost all helmets are goggle compatible and vise versa.<br />
The majority of helmets use a EPS foam to absorb impact, but some are starting use a honeycomb material for even greater protection and durability. One of the newest innovations is MIPs, which is designed to protect your brain from rotational injuries in a fall.<br />
One of the most important aspects of a helmet is the fit. Your helmet must fit correctly. If the helmet doesn't fit or is fitted incorrectly, there is a chance it will come off or reduce its effectiveness in a crash. The best way to ensure fit is to try it on and have it adjusted by a professional. The right sized helmet should fit snugly without the straps fastened. It should not move around on its own when you shake your head. At East of Maui, our staff can help you pick a helmet that fits your head, your budget, and performance level.<br />

OK, now for some bad news. Helmets are not ONE AND DONE!<br />
When do you need to replace your helmet? All manufactures recommend replacing your helmet after any major impact. The EPS foam bubbles are designed to crunch down in an impact to cushion your head, meaning you need to replace your helmet after just one crash. Even if you have been lucky enough to be crash free, most manufactures recommend replacing your helmet every 3-5 years. Sweat, hair products, use, all break down EPS over time. The interior padding also breaks down, which will affect how the helmet fits.<br />
We realize that wearing a helmet is a personal decision, but we think it is a good idea.<br />

* Love Your Brain is an organization founded after Kevin Pearce suffered a horrible accident training for the 2010 Oympics. One of Love Your Brain's missions is to improve the quality of life and recovery for people that have suffered TBI. Love Your Brain also endorses and recommend the use of helmets for snowsports. For more info: <a href="http://www.loveyourbrain.com/"><span style="color: red;"><b>www.loveyourbrain.com</b></span> </a>. Also be sure to check out Kevin's story and the movie Crash Reel.<br />

In January 2011 snowboarder Danny Toumarkine clipped a tree doing some filming with his brother Conor and some friends. Conor is a friend of one of our former employees Graham. We followed Danny's story closely. There was a good chance Danny would not live, much less recover. Conor documented both the accident, and the story in the movie "Moving Forward". You can still watch it it on YouTube :<br />

How does it work? We block off the parking lot alongside our store. Our customers bring in their gear, they price it, they sell it. Is it really as simple as that? Well yes and no. First you will need to park behind our shopping center. DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF THE CENTER, AND ESPECIALLY NOT IN THE CHEVY'S PARKING LOT! There is plenty of parking out back, but you will need to carry your gear to the side lot. You should bring blankets and pads to set your gear on. There is plenty of space, but don't be a hog, please leave space for others to lay out their gear.</div>

<span style="font-size: small;">A Little History Lesson, and time to change..........</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">A long time ago, the shop was called Windsurfing Unlimited and we were located on Rt. 50 in what was known as the Bay Bridge Market Place. Our bushiness was pretty much strictly windsurfing and the Annual SWAPS were Windsurfing SWAPS. Twenty plus years ago we moved to the Festival at Riva and changed the name of the business to East of Maui in order to reflect our diversification into other boardsports besides just windsurfing. Our business had changed but the SWAPS had not. For years, with the exception of a stray kite or two, the SWAP was still primarily used Windsurfing gear. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Well, as we approach the second Summer in our newest location, it is time for the SWAP to change. We need your help to spread the word that the SWAP is a WATERMAN'S SWAP. Bring your Stand UPs, your kiteboard gear, old surfboards, and of course your windsurfing gear. Tell your friends. Have them tell their friends. </span></div>

We were all beginners once. Virgins, never-evers, newbies, first timers. There is not one person I know, regardless of what they tell you, that started out as an expert. We all have to start somewhere. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a beginner. It is OK. You are trying something new. Be excited. Don't be embarrassed. Don't be scared. Embrace it.<br />

<br />
Day One! Take a lesson. Yes, you can teach yourself to do just about any sport or activity. However as someone who has been trained as an instructor and taught windsurfing, snowboarding, and stand up paddling, I can guarantee a beginner lesson from a good instructor will make day one at any sport a lot more fun. Just because your friend happens to be a good snowboarder, skier, paddler, surfer........fill in the blank, it does not make them a good instructor.<br />
<span style="color: red;">PRO TIP: Friends don’t let friends” teach” them to ski or ride. Go to a PSIA/AASI certified Professional instructor. You will have tons more fun and success and less frustration and likelihood of injury.</span><br />

East of Maui will be putting a few night trips and maybe even some weekend trips together this year. It sounds like fun, it would be cool to see all your buddies this winter, but you don't know how to ski or snow board. No worries, that's OK, you can still join us. Our local mountains have great snow schools, and beginner packages. .<br />
* (For those that don't need a lesson, East of Maui has rental snowboards available for $15 for our trips.) <br />
<span style="color: red;">PRO TIP: If you don’t own, the rental shops at Liberty, Whitetail and Roundtop stock very high quality boots, boards and skis. They tune the equipment for performance on a regular basis, boots are stored on a piping system to circulate warm air to dry the liners between use and they also rent all important helmets.</span><br />
<br />
What else do you need to know? What other gear are you going to need for your first day on the snow?<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: yellow;">The right gear is the difference between a good day and a great day. This was a GREAT day!</span> </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Clothing.<br />
Someone once said, "There is no bad weather, just bad clothes." This is especially true when it comes to snowboarding and skiing. Dressing correctly can make or break your day. Nothing sucks worse than being wet and cold. The key to playing the snow is dressing in layers.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9PQjPCz3oKK9VFg3rIp14Uy_maTkDK8FvxaBjg2T1JdRkh2Nq7utco28CYcFnUpS7KbFGvTTyUv7-4w73aMhGA4vxOwzK6qHXEPclC2G9h6Wf4yFqrv_0aVqmtSRFjkBV-2xDW2XFrJA/s1600/IMG_2376.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1286" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9PQjPCz3oKK9VFg3rIp14Uy_maTkDK8FvxaBjg2T1JdRkh2Nq7utco28CYcFnUpS7KbFGvTTyUv7-4w73aMhGA4vxOwzK6qHXEPclC2G9h6Wf4yFqrv_0aVqmtSRFjkBV-2xDW2XFrJA/s400/IMG_2376.jpg" width="321" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: yellow;">Layering L-R. Burton Expedition 1/4 Zip (base), Patagonia R2 Fleece (mid), Volcom Stone Block Jacket (outer)</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
You want to start with a base layer. This will be the layer next to your skin. In the old days we called base layers long johns. Even on cold days your body produces moisture. It is important that in addition to providing some insulation that the base layer wicks and moves that moisture out away from your skin. Most of the modern base layers are synthetic and will do this. However your old cotton long underwear will not. It will get wet, stay wet, and then you get cold. No fun, and potentially dangerous. Base layers are available in many different weights or thicknesses, from what some call silk weight to heavy expedition weight. For the majority of people, a set of mid-weight will be enough to keep them warm on all but the coldest days.<br />
Most skiers and boarders wear just a base layer on the bottom, under their snow pants (more on pants later), but usually wear additional mid-layers on the upper body. Mid-layers provide extra insulation, and can be fine tuned depending on how much warmth you need. Like the base layers, mid-layers should not be cotton. Synthetic fleece is good, and many of us wear a lightweight down insulator. Wool is old school, but works well in both base layers or mid-layers. Unfortunately, wool does not wick or dry quite as well as synthetics. <br />
<span style="color: red;">PRO TIP: Cotton kills in the cold weather. It holds moisture from perspiration. That moisture can contribute to the chills at best and hypothermia at worst. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
You will need outerwear. Jackets and pants. While some outerwear is insulated for warmth, the primary job of outerwear is to keep the outside out! Almost any winter jacket you have will be OK for your 1st day on the snow. It will help if it is windproof and water proof. Dedicated snow jackets have a pit zips, snow skirts, goggle pockets, and other features that are really nice once you get into it, but on day one, you will probably be able to get by with something you already own.<br />
<br />
<br />
Pants! Your jeans tucked into your ski or snowboard boots don't count. Even if it is your 1st day, you are going to need to borrow, beg, steal, or buy a pair of waterproof snow pants. A pair of snow pants is the single most important item to help you have fun in and on the snow.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: yellow;">686 Standard Pant $99.95 (photo 686)</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you are just learning to ski and especially snowboard, you will find yourself sitting and kneeling on the snow. Chairlifts are often wet or snow covered. All that stands or sits between you and a cold wet butt is a pair of waterproof snow pants. And NO, it is not OK to wear your jeans under your snow pants! It is called "Riding Dirty" and it is not allowed, except possibly in New Jersey, in which case you would be Riding Dirty Jersey. Seriously, get a good base layer bottom and a pair of waterproof snow pants. Trust me! You can even use them walking the dog or shoveling the walk the next time you get a snowstorm.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
What else? Gloves! You are going to need a pair of waterproof gloves. Next to your pants, a pair of gloves is probably the 2nd most important piece of gear you need to go skiing or snowboarding. It is important that the gloves are waterproof. Dry hands are warm hands. Warm hands are happy hands. You want your hands to be happy. If you can afford it, buy Gore-Tex gloves. They are the best. Gloves vs mittens. Mitts are warmer. Gloves have more dexterity. Those little packs of hand warmers will help keep the fingers warm on a really cold day. Use your fuzzy gloves to drive back and forth to the mountain, but leave them in the car, they will be completely useless on the snow. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Another often overlooked, but very important piece a gear is your socks. Your gym socks or your ankle high running socks are not good snow socks. An over the calf ski sock will not only help keep your feet drier, and thus warmer, they will also help your boots fit better and be more comfortable. Do not wear two pair of socks. If it is really cold, try a set of toe warmers. It is not a bad idea to have a spare pair of socks in the car just in case you get your feet wet somehow.<br />
<span style="color: red;">PRO TIP: Go against your intuition and how your momma dressed you as a kid. Thin is in! Synthetic or super thin wool. The boot will keep you warm, you will have good circulation and you will ski and ride better.</span><br />

<br />
Alright! You've signed up for a trip. You're gonna take lessons. You've got your clothing dialed in, and your ready to hit the slopes........but wait, there are sill a few more things you should know about. Protect your head. You are going to want a minimum of a beanie to help keep your head warm. The majority of skiers and boarders now wear helmets. Not only do they protect your head in a crash, they provide warmth.<br />
We understand why you may not want to invest in one for day one, but we think helmets are a good idea and consider renting one if possible. Goggles! On a cold snowy day, sunglasses are not going to cut it. Goggles are warmer and by choosing different lens colors, it can help you see better, especially in what is called low light conditions. Good goggles sell for anywhere between $100 and $250, but we still sell a decent goggle for $40. It is worth the investment. Face masks and neck gaiters are also good for extra warmth on a cold day. Try to avoid scarves or anything loose or dangling that might get hung in a chair lift.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: yellow;">Mitts, Hand warmers, Ballewrclava, Socks</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Don't forget to hydrate, and I don't mean beer or alcohol. Yes, that little shot of Jack on the lift may feel warm, but it actually can lower your core body temp and make you colder. Drink plenty of water and save the booze for après-ski.<br />
Don't be afraid to take a break. Listen to your body. You are doing something new and perhaps using different muscles than you usually do. Leave a little in the tank. Most injuries come from being tired.<br />
<span style="color: red;">PRO TIP: Eat a big breakfast, hydrate. Keep a couple snack or energy bars in your pockets to refuel. </span><br />
<span style="color: red;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: red;"><br /></span>
Last but not least remember to have fun. Don't get frustrated. Sometimes it takes a couple times out before you start getting a feel for it. One of the best windsurfing instructors I know once said, "Mastering windsurfing is when you realize that you can't." Skiing and snowboarding is exactly same. See you on the snow!<br />

It is hard to believe that another New Year is here and we are already a couple weeks into it.<br />
What a great couple of weeks it has been for snowboarding and skiing. With the extreme cold weather, our local resorts had the snow guns cranked up and the snow conditions have been really good. Many of you only know us for summer boardsports, but we also sell snowboards and other snow and cold weather related gear in the winter. There has not been too much paddling going on since the waterways around Annapolis have been pretty much iced up since just after the 1st of the year. Enjoy the cold weather, take advantage of it and hit the mountains.<br />

There are lots of events coming up in 2018 for the local SUP community.<br />
<div>
In the immediate future we are partnering with Capital SUP on Saturday Feb 10th for a day of fun on the snow at Whitetail. Details coming soon!<br />
<div>
The East of Maui/Eastport YC Chesapeake Challenge is scheduled for July 14th. Our friends at Mantra Fit are hosting the PaddleFit Games on June 24th, and The Bay Bridge Paddle is on the books for June 2nd. There are tons of social sup events in the works too. </div>
<div>

I tend to live in the moment, and look towards the future, but I did take a quick look back at some of the highlights of 2017. What a great year it was! </div>

SANTA PADDLE</h3>
<div>
We wrapped up 2017 with our Annual East of Maui Santa Paddle. Close to 40 stand up paddlers and a few kayakers, dressed in festive attire, joined Santa as he paddled around Annapolis and handed out holiday treats along the waterfront. It is always a fun day and a good way to wrap up the season.</div>

In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, I had an idea to get a few friends together, go for a paddle, throw $20 bucks in a jar and then send it to someone in Puerto Rico to help them recover from the hurricane.<br />
<div>
That idea grew beyond my wildest dreams. Before I knew it, I had prizes being donated for raffles and auctions from friends, the SUP industry, and people I didn't even know. The support of the community was mind blowing and heart warming.</div>
<div>
I could and should devote an entire blog thanking everyone for their support of the event.</div>

On Sunday October 15th, 119 people came out and braved a cool, drizzly day to paddle. After an safety meeting by me, and short talk from former Puerto Rico Attorney General Jose Fuentes, we got a first hand report on the conditions in Puerto Rico from a long time friend and customer Drew Koslow who had just returned from aid and relief efforts on the island. </div>

Mary Howser form Team Starboard and Capital SUP lead a fast paced 6 mile paddle, while most of us paddled a more leisurely 3 mile lap.</div>

We had 151 registered racers competing on 3 courses. The weather was great, and the competition strong. Unfortunately, several of the lead racers in the long race did not honor a buoy on course the correctly, resulting in a protest, and the subsequent disqualification of many men and women paddlers. As the acting race director, it was a very difficult situation, and I found no joy in having to make that decision. Everyone of the disqualified racers while extremely disappointed , accepted my decision with great sportsmanship and class. I want to thank them for that, and their support. We are looking forward to the 2018 event, but racers, please go around all the buoys on the correct side this year :) </div>

FUN!</h3>
<div>
In addition to all the individual events, we had a lot of fun in 2017. We spent a lot of days on the water, paddling with old friends, and paddling with new friends. We paddled places that we have never paddled before.We watched sunrises and sunsets from our boards. We even closed the shop one Sunday and all of us went to Nitro Circus, and saw hometown boy Travis Pastrana do his thing. That was fun.</div>

Funny thing happened the other day. I had dropped my girlfriend off at BWI, and was on my way to go mountain biking on my day off. I stopped in Glen Burnie to grab a bagel and the guy in line next to me goes, "hey, you're the Stand Up Paddle Guy". Turns out he had bought a board for his wife from us a year or so ago. We chatted for a few minutes and I headed down to Bacon Ridge for my bike ride. Just as I came out of the woods, a couple guys came over to check out my bike. One of the guys looked at me and goes "hey, you are that Snowboard Guy", to which I replied, "yep that's me".<br />
<br />
East of Maui is different things to different people. To some of our customers, we are Windsurf guys. To some we are Surf, to others we are Snow. We are Stand UP, and we are Skate. We wear many hats.<br />
Mostly we are Mark Bandy and Mark Saunders, two guys that love boardsports, and love sharing our experience and passion with our customers. There is nothing better than hearing back from a customer how much fun they are having on the gear that they bought from East of Maui. Hearing about their last surf or their next snowboard trip. Hearing about exploring a new cove on their stand up paddle board. We don't just sell the stuff...we live this stuff. We can help you live it too.<br />

In fact it hasn't been updated since March of 2015! In all honesty, I had forgotten the shop even had this blog.<br />
In this fast paced world of instant gratification, tweets, facebook accounts and sound bites, does anyone take the time to look at something for more than a few seconds, much less sit down and read a blog? <br />
The shop has been SUper busy since that last entry in 2015. Stand Up continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and we continue to work hard helping our customers buy the right gear. Rest assured while we may not be writing about it, we are paddling every chance we get. We live it, we breath it.<br />
Like most people, I don't have time to write (or read) a thousand words right now.....so for the time being, I'll let this photo I took down in the Outer Banks speak for itself. After all a picture IS worth a thousand words! Aloha-MB<br />

I'm guilty of being a creature of habit. I'm incredibly lucky to have access to the Chesapeake Bay just minutes from my door step. It is really easy to grab the board, walk around the corner and then go for a paddle. I love it!<br />

I got an invite from a friend on Saturday to meet in Baltimore the next day for a paddle around the Inner Harbor of Baltimore and check out the Tall ships and boats that were in town for the 200th anniversary celebration of the Star Spangled Banner.<br />
We met the group Sunday morning at the Under Armour facility and launched off a nearby dock. As I said above, I love paddling in Annapolis, but it was exciting to be padding someplace new and to be surrounded by the Baltimore skyline. The view of the Coast Guard Tall Ship Eagle and all of the other vessels from the water was outstanding.<br />

Once in the Inner Harbor, the group sort of split up and everyone, or at least Sarah and I went off in different directions taking in all the ships and sights of Baltimore. It was fun exploring a new place to paddle. It was different. It was invigorating.<br />

While we were putting our gear away in Baltimore, we were approached by a 30-something guy that had questions about Stand Up. He said he wanted to learn to do it, and his goal was to paddle across the river from where we were, to Canton and then probably take a water taxi back. We had just paddled from there, and for us it was just a short paddle across the river to get back from where we started. For him it was a distant new horizon and a new goal. It was so cool. I hope he gets to do it.<br />

Sometime you can discover something new in your own backyard.<br />
Tuesday night was my night to lead the East of Maui Group Paddle. I met a friend at the Maritime Museum and we paddled around to Horn Point Park to see if anyone else was joining us. We picked up another, and the three of us paddled upwind towards Annapolis Harbor.<br />
I need to back up just a bit, my friend is Captain Jen. She probably spends more time on the water than anyone I know aboard one of her beautiful Schooners Woodwind and Woodwind II taking tourist and locals sailing on the Chesapeake. Jen is just getting into stand up. We had a bit of breeze and we had to work to paddle upwind. I about fell off my board laughing when Jen said " well... this gives me a whole new perspective on the wind". Keep in mind this is coming from someone very capable and confident sailing her 74 foot schooner in just about any wind just shy of a hurricane.<br />
We paddled around Annapolis Harbor, under the draw bridge and headed up Spa Creek. Once again, Jen surprised me when she said " I had no idea there were this many boats on moorings up here". We were literally just around the corner from where she docks Woodwind, yet a short paddle on a stand up board had just opened up a whole new horizon for her to explore. Paddle on Capt. Jen!<br />

One of the greatest things about selling, teaching, and introducing people to SUP for almost 10 years is seeing the expressions on their faces the first time they feel the board glide across the water, or they see the Bay Bridge or City Dock from the deck of a board. For me, it is just another great day on the water, for them it is possibly a whole new way of life.<br />

It is already August and Labor Day is just around the corner. I don't know what any of this has to do with Stand Up paddling except that time flies when you are having fun, and I've have had a whole bunch of fun on the paddle boards this summer. From solo morning sunrise sessions, to afternoon group paddles, teaching lessons, a full race calendar, and even a few night paddles I have been paddling my butt off this summer. <br />
<br />
You might think with all the time I spend on the water that I would get tired of this but, I don't. It just keeps getting better and better.<br />

It is hard to pick out the highlights of the last two months. There have been so many, but I have to think at least for the shop, pulling off the 3rd Annual East of Maui/ Eastport YC Chesapeake Stand Up Challenge has to be one of them. <br />

We had over 100 racers in 8 classes on two courses. The weather was about as perfect as could be, and with the exception of a computer registration and timing problem everything ran smoothly, and I think, and hope everyone had a great time. (Sarah and her friend Leslie did a great job of doing the scoring by
hand and then loading the results on the computer, so everyone could see
the results by Sunday morning). There are so many people to thank for helping East of Maui pull this off, but special thanks to Joe Donahue and Ramzi Bannura at EYC for providing us with such a great venue. Also to the sponsors, Naish, Da Kine, Raw Elements,Supreme, Landshark, Refllekt, Starboard, and Wise & Donahue, thanks for helping us make it happen.<br />

<br />
Before the race I had decided I wanted to do something special for whoever was the last person to actually finish the long 6.5 mile course. Not to take anything away from the people who win, but sometimes I think it is harder to finish some of these races than it is to win. While the leaders are fighting it out for glory at the front of the race, it can be an awfully long day and lonely day at the back end of the race. It takes a lot of motivation to keep on keeping on when you know everyone else is a ashore and the party has started without you. Just before the start, Mark Colino gave me a carbon Starboard paddle and told me to use it for a prize. I immediately knew what I was going to use it for, I just didn't know who. That who, turned out to be a guy by the name of Allan Navo. I began the awards presentation by announcing that I had a special award to the last place finisher for completing the tough course and rising to the Challenge. I think Allan was in shock when I presented him with the paddle. At the time I didn't realize just how a big a challenge Allan had conquered. Allan stopped by the shop the following week to have us size up and cut his new paddle. Turns out he had on recently completed rather aggressive chemo for cancer in April and was just retuning to Stand UP after a long absence. He may not have had the fastest official time, but Allan is the new Champion of the 2014 Chesapeake Challenge.<br />
<br />
Which somehow brings me around to the beginning of this mess. I have been paddling and selling Stand Up boards for 10 years now. I can't believe how fast the past 10 years have flown by. It seems like just yesterday Trip Foreman loaned me his board, showed me how to hold the paddle (correctly I might add) told me to "have fun and don't f' up his board". Every minute, every hour, every day I have spent on water on a stand Up board the has has flown by and be insanely fun (well actually not some of the long upwind paddles but that's another story), and like I said before, when you are having fun time flies. <br />

I had a great time at the Carolina Cup a couple weeks ago and hope to get around to posting a full recap in the near future. Just in case I don't, let me say now, "It was an awesome event." Yay!<br />

<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Buyer Beware</h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As the sport of Stand Up continues to explode, more and more people are getting into the business from from all sides. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
From the manufacturing side, it seems like everyday I get phone call from overseas, from somebody wanting to build boards for me CHEAP! I have been the board business a long time, you get what you pay for. A turd with a fancy paint job is still a turd. Sorry, I don't want to sell turds. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It also came to my attention this spring, that there is an online company that has copied/stolen the designs of a well know brand, and then are having them built using inferior materials, and then trying to pass them off as the real deal "but with different graphics". Buyer beware! -Boo! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
From the retail side, there are a lot of people selling Stand Up. There are many quality retailers that know what they are doing, and do a great job matching up the customer with the right equipment. -Yay! Unfortunately there are many people selling boards that have no clue. It really is a bummer to hear that someone bought a board that is totally unsuited for them. Instead of being stoked on an awesome sport, they are turned off, maybe for ever. -Boo!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Myself, my business partner and our employees all paddle. We know what really works, and what really doesn't. We have chosen the products we want to sell, represent, stand up on, and stand behind in our store. Having the right gear is fun. East of Maui has been helping people have more fun since 1979. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you or one of your friends a looking to buy a board or learn about Stand Up Paddling, please stop by and visit East of Maui. We promise to do our very best to put you or your friends on the right gear. </div>

<br />
The 2014 Carolina Cup is now just a week away. My training for the race is more like a train wreck. I have paddled very little this winter, and I don't think I have paddled at all this month. What the hell am I thinking?<br />
<br />
The following is an excerpt from SUP Racer.com : " The Carolina Cup, held in humble little Wilmington, North Carolina,
is fast becoming not only one of the biggest races on the calendar, but
one of the <i>most significant</i> events in the entire world of SUP racing, period.
<br />
– in fact it
might just be the <i>second most competitive</i> race in the world
this year, after only the BOP), or because luminaries such as Dave
Kalama, Jimmy Terrell and Larry Cain will be doing clinics, or because
pretty much every major brand will have a presence there, but also
because the event will have HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS of recreational
paddlers competing."<br />
<br />
"Competing"? I'm just hoping I survive. I haven't paddled 6.5 miles since last November. I'm going to die! <br />
<br />
You may have heard the phrase "Eddie Would Go". Eddie Aikau was a famous Hawaiian big wave surfer and life guard. Eddie would go surfing or out to rescue someone when the conditions were too dangerous for anyone else to go. I never knew Eddie, but I have a friend named Frank.<br />
Frank is an ultra-marathon runner. He would never admit it, but he is a serious athlete, perhaps. Frank does crazy things like run 3 back to back marathons to raise money for the families of the of the Boston Marathon bombing victims (after doing an SUP race in the morning), and then personally RUNS the money to Boston. By his own account, he does many of these unbelievable feats, at the last minute, and with very little training and planning. While most athletes are carefully monitoring their diets before these events, Frank is likely to work all night, slam down a few chili dogs, and show up at the starting line and still have a respectable finish. The bottom line is Frank has never let the lack of preparation stand in the way of going out and abusing himself in the name of adventure and a good time. <br />

<b>So, what does all of this have to do with Stand Up paddling? </b> Actually nothing at all, but as I question my sanity and my own lack of preparation for the biggest, baddest Stand Up paddle race of the season, I ask myself, "what would Frank do? " <b>FRANK WOULD GO!</b> <br />
So, with that in mind, I guess I have to put my big boy surf trunks on, load the truck, and head to Wrightsville. I'm going to bypass Frank's chili dogs, but there is a real good chance I'm gonna stop along the way for some North Carolina BBQ! <br />

We love snow and winter at East of Maui.We have been in love with this winter. The snowboard conditions have been better at our local mountains than they've been in years. We've been shredding every chance we get. There is still plenty snowboarding ahead for us, but we live and think about Stand Up and Surfing everyday. A lot! </div>
<div class="verse" style="text-align: left;">
We try to paddle all year, but this winter has been a tough because of the ice on the creeks, rivers and the Bay. </div>
<div class="verse" style="text-align: left;">
Last Sunday my local launch appeared to be ice free, so I climbed into my drysuit and headed out For a paddle. I had not gone far before encountering big ice flows in the Severn, and upon entering the Harbor, still found it iced over. I turned back towards the river and had a hard paddle home in building breeze. </div>
